Candida Slater

I was twelve when I saw Monet’s Waterlilies in the Jeu de Paume in Paris and the power of art first blew my mind. Throughout my life as a diplomat and as the wife of a British Ambassador I followed my passion in the great cities of the world, memorably Lates at the Met and the Frick, which were a revelation that art is also meant to be fun. Back here in London I am spoiled for choice and I can go to see something marvellous every day. My work is therefore very much influenced by the art that is all around me, old and new.

I paint abstracts in acrylic, and I am currently based at Wimbledon Art Studios. I have been creating artworks for twenty-five years, selling mainly to private collectors.  My work explores the tension between chaos and control, the constant human need to find patterns, and to capture a glimpse of what lies beyond visible boundaries. Everything is ephemeral and we snatch at beauty and order while we can.

I also make gently satirical mixed media fine art prints, using cut paper images of art, icons and archetypes – plus stickers and emojis – to recast myths and legends as stories about life today (Reasons to be Happy).

Let me know if you would like to come and see me in the studio. There is coffee. And biscuits.
